My hope is for the phone to work on the Nextel / Sprint network not just because I have a Nextel, but because they have had time with their walkie-talkie feature, and I'd imagine that that would benefit the use of something like iChat over the phone.
I can't see Apple releasing an iDEN compatible phone ever. iDEN (Nextel) is going away by 2010 supposedly, and it'll be just the CDMA and GSM networks. Apple needs to either support both (like the Treo) or stick with GSM so they don't get locked into a single carrier. Cingular's good, but I want to use it with T-Mobile too. Lots of people on Verizon or Sprint want to as well, though it'll be trickier to do that, since the carriers have to make the ESN swaps and they don't want to do that to a phone they don't sell/support (read: make money off of). I do agree that the walkie-talkie function could potentially be used, but all the big networks have a version of it, and Cingular, T-Mobile, and Verizon's are all supposed to be made compatible before too much longer, whereas Sprint/Nextel is keeping both versions of theirs exclusive, which limits it's usefulness.

The main reason that it will never happen -> they never will charge the gas by the liter, they want to keep it by the gallon...and continue increasing the price, if they change to the liters...a lot of people will be confused and start to complaint and blame the price increases on the metric system...wait they may want to use it as a smoke flare....hum,....:confused:

Ok...and the MSRP for that phone would be 800 bucks with a 10 year contract with cingular.
People need to realize that apple products are somewhat overpriced so I can see a great apple phone with great features but with a contract the phone is going to be extremely expensive.
Nokia already has phones (their N series (http://www.nokia.com/nseries/index.html?lang=en&country=US#product,n93)) capable of 640x480 30fps vid at $800 unlocked. I don't see an Apple Phone with these capabilities being THAT much more and certainly cheaper if Apple is the provider for the phone service as some people are speculating.

Regardless of what happens on the 7th, I'm ordering a MBP. Though, things look like they're shaping up for that! Apple would be nuts not to put that chip in the MBP now that it's shipping.

Think about it...
Appl introduced a new Verizon iPhone 4 in January of this year and it only launched last month (February).
Apple is also expected to release a white version of the iPhone 4 next month.
These two iPhone 4 upgrades seem to allow Apple to push back the launch of their next-generation handset. Afterall, how could they release updated iPhone 4s in February and April then a whole new device in June?

Well, I've recently heard some speculation about a smart device from Apple to go along with the consumer device and if Palm is hearing the same whispers, I'd think it would be a bit concerning. However, Palm just introduced the Treo 680p, so it may not matter as much, once that has been deployed on various carriers' networks.
Yeah, I have too, but I don't buy it, really. If you look at Apple's products aimed at professionals/businesses, they're exclusively either Macs or software/software houses they've acquired. I don't think Apple is likely to break with the success it has had offering consumer hardware like the iPod. The iTV will follow in that tradition.
For the record, I really like PalmOS. It does what it's supposed to do very well. What concerns me is the way the companies (or have they reamalgamated now?) are being led in a strange direction - the move to Windows Mobile looks to me like Palm/Palmsource trying to hedge their bets rather than properly marketing what they have had going for them all these years. Time will tell whether it's a good business decision, and whether the PalmOS survives at all. I, for one, hope that it does.

Your app is prolly simple enough that you could do that. Consider more complex apps such as games and video-editing that require extensive use of the x86 architecture. That's the real problem.
People who still use assembly in their software are just sad. There is absolutely NO reason to use CPU-specific stuff, not anymore, as we have OpenCL and similar tech for performance-critical parallel computations.
The only field where hand-coded assembly makes sense are interpreters.
And in all seriousness, that is the real issue. Switching from x86 to ARM RISC is a really big problem because the benefit of x86 is that so much work has been done on it, porting Windows apps and/or games is simply a software coding issue as opposed to hardware. Even if ARM had comparable processes to x86 to compensate to some degree, that's still another series of steps to go through.
And this is precisely the reason why the inefficient and outdated architecture like x86 is still alive. If Apple has the courage to make the first step towards a better tech: I will applaud them.
Or even better, just build x86 chips in-house like they do with the A series.
You are joking, right? x86 CPU is a completely different pair of shoes from the ARM CPUs. Later can be designed easily. First ones are absolute monsters in terms of complexity. Intel has decades of design experience which all live in their current CPU line. Destroy all the information about Sandy Bridge designs from Intel servers, and it will take them at least 5 years to reconstruct it.

i dont think this will be a dream feature phone but it will work wonderfully with iSync and .Mac, iTunes, iPhoto, Frontrow (BT controller), Mail, iCal, AddressBook etc
I hope it has a 2 megapixel camera and at least half a gig of ram.

Could "Conroe" ever make its way into a Mac Mini? Or would it just cause the mini to melt into a metalic puddle on the desk?
If they made it a little taller it should be easy-peasy for Apple to fit the necessary cooling. Hey, if they're making it taller, they could add a 3.5" Hard Drive which is much cheaper than laptop hard drives and we could finally get a 500GB Mini.

Where is the logical place for a dock? At the bottom (no brainer--do you want to turn your device sideways or upside down?). Grid is the most efficient layout. How else are you going to lay them out?
Delete is a little similar, but it is one of the easiest ways to delete something. You can't exactly right click and going to the menu to delete apps seems innefficient.
Palm and Microsoft put their icons in a grid pattern that Apple COPIED with iOS. I don't see them (or their patent holders in the case of Palm) suing. Apple is acting like a baby because they can see what it coming (more open ecosystems, less expensive options) and they know it will mean a loss of power and money.
Perhaps you need to actually look at an iPhone 3GS and a Galaxy Tab sometime.

Oh man! That would be great... but I have a hard time seeing Apple do this. I'd be happy with like a "basic" version that'd be free... and for those who want the whole package, some sort of fee... but not $99 per year. Only time will tell I guess.

I'd pay a premium for products manufactured in the US.
Products might be more expensive, but there would be more Americans employed. As much are there is a downside to producing here, there is also an upside.
I avoid most american made products, half of them are crap. Prime examples are the cars made by Chrysler and GM between 2000-2008. This however are drastically improving though, not sure if we (Americans) could produce all of these things with taxes, restrictions, trade barriers etc. I am sure there are very good reasons why the parts are made there and not here. Plus there is a plethora of unknown pollution aspects of producing tech products. Tree hugger's would freak

Socketed CPUs are higher (not a good idea in a laptop). Soldered also gives better connections, which may be important since a laptop is likely to be used in more diverse environments. Like outside, in hot sunshine, or while sitting at a freezing cold trainstation...

Bogus story because Apple would never fit graphics cards capable of outputting at that res in the iMacs or laptops. Plus I don't think any single monitor can have that resolution that you can buy today?
They currently do... even the Airs can do 1440x700 plus a 2560x1440 Cinema Display. And the 15" MBP and up and all the iMacs have pretty good video cards. You're wrong.

I'm hoping for a new Cinema too, but the DPI on them is as high as it's ever going to get, IMO. There's no need for a higher pixel density on a screen that you see from that distance. The screens in them are already very dense. They're equivalent to the Dell Ultra Sharp, which are over $1000.
The resolution will not be updated, but hopefully the Cinemas will get dual Thunderbolt ports and maybe USB 3.0 and audio through Thunderbolt.

we will still be 'together, and we can merge back in a group any time.

It's not a zero sum game. Western economies will increasingly shift toward higher skilled professions as the BRIC countries take over manufacturing and mid level white collar work. The U.S. must step up its educational training in order for its many low paid service workers to move up the ladder, though.

First step to a totally closed system. Pretty soon all our applications we want will have to come through the App store for our Macs. The day I see that is the day I turn my Mac OFF.
I will go back to Windows in a heart beat if I am forced to buy my applications and such through Apple.

They would have to redesign too much of the OS to make it that closed, and they'd have to take away so many features that it wouldn't be the same OS anymore. I doubt Apple is stupid enough to do that. It's true that Apple wants to have as much control over the entire process as they can get, but I firmly believe that there are limits to it. They wont sabotage their own OS because I don't think i've ever met anyone clueless enough to think that that would be a good idea.

You can't protect (or indeed measure) 'usability'.
People come here because we use, have problems with, or are considering buying Apple products. Not all of us are absolutely crazy in love for for anything that Jobs has touched.
